Welcome to the Kalix River Basin

Swedish I Finnish I English I German

The Kalix River Valley stretches from the high mountains in north-west to the Gulf of Bothnia in south-east. The river flows through a multi-cultural area in which Laplander-, Finnish and Swedish customs and folklore are intertwined with each other. On its way towards the sea, the stream passes the most genuine parts of Lappish high-mountain wilderness, waving taiga forests and a dazzling agricultural landscape, near the coast. The archipelago, with its brackish water, harbours a multitude of islands and islets, inviting everyone to family-friendly boat trips, pleasant bathing and exiting discoveries. A traditional fishery, utilising nets and fishing-lines is also exercised in this area. The Kalix River starts its flow west of Sweden's highest mountain - Kebnekaise- in the inner parts of Lapland within the municipality of Kiruna. Here, a 430 kilometre long journey starts towards Kalix in the northernmost archipelago of the Gulf of Bothnia. The unrestrained large river flows through the entire County of Norrbotten, crossing the Arctic Circle and the landscapes Lapland and Norrbotten. When it later on debouches into the sea, the water has passed some seventy rapids and waterfalls. Alongside the entire river valley, a vast array of activities might be offered for all age groups, with angling as one of the most frequent attractions. The river harbours a favourable stock of grayling, but also salmon trout, whitefish and salmon.

We invite you to an exciting journey through one of the northernmost fishing grounds in the world - where a multitude of game fish in its natural habitat, is still to be found. In addition to this, mile-long forests, potable water, clean air and friendly people.

Welcome!
