THE UNCHAINED BEAUTY OF THE KALIX RIVER

"Man never feels so small as when standing at large and murmuring waters, black flat-rocks and vertiginous abysses ". Gunnar Westrin

Downstream of Lappeasuando, enormous volumes of water shape land and beaches. Parakkakurkkio and Pahakurkkio are some classic, large salmon rapids, both exceptionally beautiful and absolutely worth seeing. Both ParakkakurkioÕs ancient forests and the mile-long canyon-formation of Pahakurkkio, constitute some of the really ancient elements of the river valleyÕs ecological structure. The stretch suitable for fishing at Pahakurkkio, is regarded to be one of the best in the Kalix River as regards angling, especially for grayling, salmon trout and salmon. In angling circles it is supposed to be a Ófeather in the capÓ to succeed in taming one of the muscular, large salmons of the rapid.

Parakka Fiskecamp is located at Parakka, , with excellent opportunities for pleasant accommodation and unforgettable wilderness-and fishing- experiences. In Masugnsbyn - the Gateway to Lapland - some of the best reproduction-areas in the Kalix River for salmon trout and salmon are found. The area also holds a five kilometre long angling stretch at Mustisuando, and in addition, an interesting stretch, suitable for fly-fishing.

Mustisuando is a fishing-ground with alternating rapids and streams. There are plenty of habitats for grayling, salmon trout and salmon. It is noteworthy that the use of nets is prohibited since 1989 within the entire Masugnsbyn fishery protection area, something which in the long run has proven very successful. The fishery protection area also manages a beautiful angling- and wilderness-establishment close to Vinkakoski in the Kalix River, and is also able to offer guides. The fishing camp - Bomminiemi - has four timber cabins with room for four persons each. Sauna is available, and also wood-sheds and lavatories. Close to the lake Nurmajärvi, pleasant accommodation might be found, with opportunities for conferencing.

Saittarova Intresseförening and the Vaenvaara - Männikö Byars Intresseförening offer genuine accommodation in wilderness-cabins in the proximity of Pahakurkkio, and also at its genuine fishing-camp on the bank of the Kalix River at Männikkö village, including guides for those who wish to utilise such service.

Huskyresor offers wilderness activities at - and in connection to - the river. A pleasant camp with timbered buildings, located on a holm in the Kalix River, with the exotic name Makkarasaari, is utilised as base for all activities. One speciality is spinning (bait casting) courses for women, tutored by women.
