TJUONAJOKK FISHING CAMP
" One can with perfect justice claim that the Kaitum River, all the way down to the outlet in the Kalix River, is one of Europe's most attractive angling waters. The grayling fishery, first and foremost the fly-fishing - is famous all around, and from my point of view, there is no streaming water more exuberant of grayling on our poor globe." Gunnar Westrin, excerpt from his book " The Sunfish" .
Where the Kaitum River starts,
Tjuonajokk is to be found
In a land without roads, at the north shore of the Lower Kaitum Lake, the world famous
fishing camp Tjuonajokk is to be
found. For ages, this location is a concept for the fly fisherman, and it is predominantly
the grayling that attracts all interest. The camp holds some fifteen huts with four to six
cots, a large wood-heated sauna, a well-assorted convenient store and a cosy restaurant.
Boats, a telephone and trained wilderness-and fishing-guides are also part of this camp.
In the proximity of this location, the actual Kaitum River begins. Here, the fly-fisherman
friendly streams Tajvek and Kukkak are to be found, in which waters, several large
graylings have been caught.
Tjirtjam
There are three tributary lakes of the Kaitum River, of which all are deeply imbedded
between beautiful mountains and black abysses. Between the Middle- and Lower Kaitum Lakes,
the legendary char- and grayling stream Tjirtjam, is to be found, a popular fishing-ground
for predominantly the fly-fisherman. The streams harbour a favourable stock of large
grayling, char and salmon fish. It is still usual with graylings, weighing well over 1
kilogram, but twice as big fish are annually caught. This fishing-ground is still
something of a fly-fisherman's dream with a beautiful background of steep mountains,
bluish waters and watching fish.
