ÖVERKALIX METRO- POLIS OF THE WILDERNESS

The longish valley of the Kalix River is dazzling throughout the summer with an almost exotic floral splendour. The town of Överkalix lies embedded in this exuberance. The Kalix River flows in the vicinity of the town. Broad and mighty, it here meets the legendary angling-river Ängesån. In Överkalix, all kinds of excellent service for the discriminating visitor, might be offered, with for instance a new hotel, beautifully located at the river shore. The hotel offers - in addition to first-class dining and accommodation - a large variety of activities for the entire family, during summer as well as winter. Excellent conferencing facilities are available, and also a scenic restaurant and a pleasant sauna.

North of the town, from Jockfall and down towards Rödupp, the extensive Orrforsen fishery protection area is to be found. Here, the angler might really choose between favourable fishing-grounds, and the area also harbours a good stock of streaming grayling, biting salmon trout and climbing salmon. There are a number of locations available for the keen angler, locations which - in addition to their good wading conditions, also offer excellent opportunities for pleasant angling. Among the well-known locations during the 10 kilometre long river stretch, we might for instance mention Vinnäsgrynnorna and the Ansvar- and Orr Rapids. South of Överkalix, the even more powerful Kalix River forms the enticing Räktforsen Rapids. Here, the tourist might enjoy nature´s great performance from the best available parking-place - along the road E 10, between the coast and the town of Kiruna.
